I have previously been the head of promo design, motion graphics and editing for 8 years at a major UK Studio. The Head of Graphics and Special Effects at NATS Post Production - one of the largest facilites in Soho (for 3 Years) and Head of Compositing and Graphics at The Station Post Production (for 4 years) creating hundreds of promos, commercials, TV progammes and films with clients including MTV, SKY, Universal Music, Jamiroquai and Van Morrison, Saatchi & Saatchi, Merial, MCcann Erickson and many, many more.
I started with softimage 3d and pixel putty solo nearly 30 years ago.
Between projects I have spent 3 years teaching compositing and grading at the national film and Television school.
Now I just love CG and want to make videos teaching some of the bits and pieces I think might have been forgotten by the industry along the way!

I give up, blender is definitely not for me. I can't fking remember people's names, how the fck can I remember a million keyboard shortcuts? I guess I'll have to keep using pirated 3ds max versions till the end of my time....
it's so cruel of you, not sharing your knowledge with us....that's not fair (comeback and show us the other tutorials you were talking about)
would this method work with a cube ?
Great video, Thanks, why the cylinder does not have this option when we create it, that will be nice if they added in version 5.
I said it once, I'll say it again, Ian, you are the man!
I maybe hopeless but can you upload the knight modeling video too!!! can't wait to complete my chess set!!! I hope you will read this comment and will upload it soon!!!
hey man, what is poked poles and why subd won't flow right through it???
You are the man!
Is there a story behind the magic numbers .9946 and .9983 or you just at arrived at them by trial and error? Great video as always!
Goddamn! Best 11 minutes I've spent on youtube. Subscribe
It's pretty wild how you can turn 2 cylinders into so many different things using modifiers. I know Blender can do all these things but getting my brain to think this way is often a struggle haha. You model something unnecessary complex while for your use case you could of also just merged 2 cubes, slap some modifiers on and no one would notice the difference lol.
Hi Sir Ian, Amazing tutorial, learnt so much
Love your videos man, always learn something new :)
juicy juicy amazing amazing beautiful yes amazing grandious.
when you set the loop cuts to 2.7, I couldn't figure out how you get them to be mirrored. I have looked it up but so far I'm just finding recommendations to use the mirror modifier when I think that isn't want you're doing. How do I get the 2 loop cuts to move in opposite directions?
next level
amazing, thank you for this
thank you for the hard work you put into making these really beneficial tutorials. Hope you are okay and wish you all the best.
amazing videos and great tutorials!! I have never learned so much during so short amount of time!
you can just select all faces and press "i" to inset. then delete faces. you dont have to do the "GG" then Alt.
🙏✨ Thank you for this!
Very much appreciated
Been using blender for about two years now but only just now learned about this essential tool. Thank you so much.
Interesting method, but I still think a Boolean to SubD approach is quicker. Union the two shapes, then Bevel the connecting edge (profile = 1) to protect the borders and then cleanup. You can get an identical result to what you showed but without having to faff with vertex groups and modifiers.
Hi i am form austria Good cylinder Technik Thanks Happy new year good time
Fantastic, and well taught. Thank you :)
Nice one M8 !
Dear Mr. McGlasham, I wish you and your lovely family a Merry Christmas! I hope you are doing well; it has been quite some time since your last video. There’s something about your tutorials that fills me with joy and excitement. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is, but it makes your content stand out from the vast majority of polygonal modeling content on UA-cam. I truly hope you’ll return to creating Blender content. I’d also love to support you on Patreon, if you decide to create an account. Warm regards from Kyiv
Nice tutorial. I wish I had someone I could ask questions when stuck. I've been learning for about a week now, but I went straight into trying to repair an expensive model military truck from CGT. Its mesh is quite bad and non-manifold, open in places, see-through from one side, or has parts inside other parts, like the steering box, etc. It might be easier rebuilding it in Fusion; Blender is a whole new ball game, but I am enjoying it. I get stressed out by videos contradicting each other, so I'm looking for someone good at explaining, like yourself, who sticks to their videos. cheers I'm going to try this to rebuild some mesh and clean up hopefully haha.
Some things are different in my version of blender, but it was a helpful tutorial nonetheless. Your instructions were very clear and I could fill the gaps to create a slightly different, yet acceptable result, which says a lot given I'm completely new to blender. Thank you, and I'm sure the rest of your tutorials will be just as informative.
@@PonostheClown Thank you. Let me know if you have any problems and i will try to help.
He did the thing!! 1:01 YEAAAAAHHH!!! :D Fabulous

@@ianmcglasham Haha Merry Christmas to you and yours Ian hope you are doing well :)
I was working on a car model and i accidentally moved a couple of vertices in the roof area and i realised it few days later and was really frustrated . I did have a good curvature set on the other areas tho and this method solved my problem, Thank you
I've seen you haven't post any new video for almost an year. Such a pity, your content is great.
It seems you're very professional i hope you share new tutorials especially topology study in blender; and thanks
@@3DBlendMix Thank you very much.
Your knowledge of the software is mind blowing. Please make more videos!!
Please make more tutorials
in 7:52, why are you adding so many circles around to make the hole in the middle? I am new to subd modelling and so far I know we are supposed to be adding supporting edge loops to hold the shape. But why more than one here? when do i know when to add more?
It's called "Topology". He made this to have a control of the figure's smoothness
Great tutorial to teach the fundamentals, I still come back here from time to time to have a refreshment watching at 2x speed
Pretty useful channel for an ignorant like me in topology ( my channel is more focused on Math, Programming ... often Within blender.) The speech quality is impressing too ... ( no hesitation, no mmm , no aaaheeee , ... I can't help doing that sometimes ... ) Subscribed ... well deserved.
I didn't see a better teacher on the whole youtube
This is the most profesional ABC every modeller should start with.
at 15:34 is Alt+Shift+Click for those figuring out why it's not working the deselection :P
I guess 10:40 is the most viewed XD
my favorite part "We can delete all of this, it's rubbish" :))
You're very clever thanks for these tutorials i need more tutorials about topology improvement if you don't mind
I’m watching this in nov 2024 and to be honest I didn’t find a teacher like you on the whole UA-cam. I know from other vids comms that you are busy with your main work but when you will find time I recommend adding your videos in Udemy
Great tutorial
When Udemy sir? Your content is outstanding
Wonderful tutorial like always, thank you! Just to add that in version 4.3, a value of 0.05 m is needed in the new option called Proportional Size (after selecting the Sharp option in Falloff type for proportional editing mode) at 7:41
Mister, you are the Discovery channel of Blender. I learned so much, thank you!
